It’s official: Green Edge set to compete on world stage

Australia now has its very own international cycle team, Green Edge. The world cycling governing body, Union Cycliste Internationale, has granted the new Australian team, Green Edge, a licence to compete with the world’s elite teams.

Australian businessman, Gerry Ryan has helped fund the team that includes experienced cyclists, Robbie McEwan, Stuart O’Grady and tour riders, Matthew Goss, Simon Gerrans, Brett Lancaster, Matt Wilson and Allan Davis.

Santos Tour Down Under in January 2012

The first big event will be the Santos Tour Down Under in rural and regional South Australia which starts today, 17 January 2012.

Later in the year, the Australian cycle team will take on the world’s best at the Tour de France and other major cycling events in Europe. They’ll be competing against 15 Europeans and three US teams. Now we have an Australian team in the mix for the first time.

From the official Green Edge website

Given the propensity towards big [in Australia], that’s what you can expect from the team. Sure, we’ve got a lot of home-grown talent. But we’ve also brought in some big players from around the world, to find the edge in every aspect of our sport, stretch it, explore it and push it forward. That’s where we’re coming from.

It’s exciting times in Australian cycling.

Captivations wish the Green Edge Cycle Team all the best in the Santos Tour Down Under. We’ll be watching their progress this year with great interest. Go Aussies!
