School uniforms can now be claimed from July 1 2011 as part of the Education Tax Rebate

The Federal Treasurer, Wayne Swan, announced last night in his Budget Speech that many Australian parents will be able to claim the cost of school uniforms from July 1 2011. Those eligible for the Family Tax Benefit will receive an additional $161.00 per fortnight.

“We understand that when you’re under cost of living pressures, every bit helps – which is why we are extending the education tax rebate to school uniforms,” Treasurer Wayne Swan told the Sunday Mail earlier this week.

“Sending your kids to school can be a real strain on the family budgets, with costs like uniforms, so we want to provide as much help as we can. This comes on top of three years of tax cuts which have cut the tax bill of someone earning $50,000 by almost 20 per cent, as well as extra payments up to $4200 to help parents keep teenagers in school in their later years.”

It is estimated that 670,000 families will benefit from being able to claim the rebate for school uniforms.
